whats your favorite movie with "Tim Burton" in it?
mine are:

pee-wee’s big adventure

sweeney todd: the demon barber of fleet street

tim burton’s corps bride

charlie and the chocolate factory

big fish

edward scissorhands

sleepy hollow

beetlejuice

james and the giant peach

the nightmare before christmas

I was not aware Tim Burton was an actor. However, I love Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Corpse Bride, but Charlie and the Chocolate factory, Sleepy Hollow, and all the others mentioned above are all of slightly lower levels of awesomeness, but awesome nonetheless.

Are you going to go see Alice in Wonderland when it comes out (March 5)? I certainly hope to, it looks awesome.

Edit: as do I, ItsBitzo. In fact, I’m wearing my Jack Skelington slippers right now. My feet are smiling up at me. Must be Christmas.

Please edit/proofread my writing. Greatly Appreciated?
My writing needs more flow. It’ll be great if you can take a look at it and provide feedback. Thanks!!!!!! Oh i have a few more essays, please leave your email if you want to help. Thanks

Having the opportunity to receive an education in America is invaluable; even obtaining the knowledge in English would be extremely useful. However, my parents did not have the luxury to even attend a single day at English as Second Language School. After our first day in America, my parents immediately joined the work force. Within a month, my eldest uncle, who sponsored us to America, told my parents that they have to move since his business did not have enough customers to support them. My parents, the two newly trained nails technicians, along with their three children, moved from Florida to New York, back to different parts of Florida, to Michigan, and then to Rhode Island. I never blamed my father, nor held a grudge, for all the times I had to start over in a new school and make new friend just when I was getting settled in. I knew he was trying everything possible for us, and sometimes I would wake up in the middle of the night to check on him to make sure that he was home. Often times these would be the only moments that I was able to see him for days. Because of my family’s limited means, I took full advantage of different public resources during middle school, from attending after-school homework clubs to engaging in the local library’s summer reading programs, to improve my English. As I got older I was able to lighten the burden for my father. I would go interpret for him if something ever came up and I would go help out at our nails salon after school. Any phone calls regarding our business or house bills would be made by me as my father did not understand much English. This was the least I could do for the family.

Nelson Mandela once said, "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart". Volunteering at Rhode Island Free Clinic, I also served as an interpreter for newly immigrated Vietnamese families. I can only imagine the fear and frustration of those that are requiring treatment when facing difficulties or the inability to communicate. Understanding them and speaking to them in their native language prove invaluable in relieving their frustration, easing their fear and discomfort while building a strong, trusting relationship. Knowing and speaking the English language seems to be the greatest knowledge and resource that these Vietnamese families needed to survive in America. At the same time, knowing that I helped someone in this way would provide me with a great feeling of pride and accomplishment.

Blade Runner and The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2) Pleeeease help?
I have an 8-10 page sci fi research paper due tomorrow afternoon, and I procrastinated. I’ve seen both Blade Runner and The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2) but I’m struggling to find a whole lot to write about. It’s a pretty broad paper, compare and contrast the movies for eight to ten pages. I think I’m probably psyching myself out, but I can’t seem to write too much. If anyone has any interest in these two movies, or just one of them, and wants to write out a bit about something they think could be good to write about, please please do. If you have any sort of analysis or comparison/contrasting arguments at all please write as much as you want. I need all the help I can get. Thanks in advance if anyone decides to help out!

email: teleportney@yahoo.com

different depictions of futuristic dystopian society?

mad max is post apocalypse but i don’t think blade runner is.

blade runner’s future is really high-tech whereas mad max’s has reverted to a more feral primitive way of life.

just an idea?

(i personally prefer the first mad max movie, but either would apply here probably!)

Matt H | Nov 30, 2009

There have always been dystopian films, even going back to silent film. Metropolis, was a huge budget silent film that depicted a post apocalyptic society.
—————–
Novels, (like 1984 written in 1948) and some essayists began depicting society as already in the post apocalyptic age. Particularly as third world cities began exploding in population in the 1930’s. Films like The Omega Man (1971) showed a dark future, Sleeper (1973) a funny one, Soylent Green (1973) was one with a dark secret that seems very corny today. THX 1138 (1971) was a little like the novel 1984.
—————–
In my opinion, the darkest films were the ones that seemed to project the worst of society into a future that was similar to the worst of the present. Films like Rollerball (1975) and O Lucky Man! (1973) and A Clockwork Orange (1971) . The enemy in these films was our own nature, not some vampires. It reminds me of "The Fall", a novel written by Albert Camus in 1956 which creates a chilling effect of painting a picture of a bright successful man through his monologues, who you identify with, but by the end of the novel turns out to be a chillingly cold evil human being.
—————–
Blade Runner was really the first movie of it’s kind to use the style of a 1930’s film noir picture, but at the same time combining it with a visualization of a city that looks like present day Tokyo or Los Angeles, but grossly exaggerated. You have the street argot , the multi-cultural society, the skyscrapers, and the climate changes caused by thousands of acres of asphalt and the wind blowing around the huge buildings. However, it is a future that you can see happening. If you will, it is the apocalypse caused by our exploding numbers.
—————-
Despite the future setting, and the androids, the storyline could come out of a movie made in the 1930’s. Small time grim beaten down cop, looking for love and fighting against impossible odds. Plus the enemy turns out not to be monsters, but lost "things" just looking for their place in the world, and the right to live.
————-
The movie had a huge impact. No one can make a movie about the future on earth without some acknowledgement of Blade Runner . You could no longer make the "city of tomorrow" that was the mainstay of earlier science fiction. The director successfully united the past of film-making with visions of tomorrow.
————-
It is important to realize that the director’s vision was more emotional and less of a plot movie. The studio required him to add the voice-over so that the less imaginative film watcher would have a clearer plot. Also he envisioned a quick ending (like a Coen Brothers film). The studio insisted that he add the scene with them driving away in the car with some footage of mountains. Although the voice over explicitely states that he doesn’t know how long she will live, he does say that no one knows how long they have to live. However, the general tone is hopeful letting the audience leave with a more positive feeling.
