Why do some people demand to see proof of God's existence?
I am aware of how the human mind works. We are sometimes cynical. We have doubts that cannot be dismissed very easily. We need to have proof in front of us to establish what we consider to be the truth.

There is nothing at all wrong with asking for proof of things. There is nothing at all wrong with asking for proof that God exists. And perhaps you will assume that this is a cop out- but the reality is that there never will be proof that God exists until either A. Jesus comes back to Earth (which will indeed happen at some point in the future) or B. We pass away from this world, and we are suddenly confronted with the truth of things. Until that time arrives, God is not going to just jump out from the clouds, saying "Here I am!" And do you know why that is?

Here is the reason: first of all, we have free will. If God were to present himself to us- if he were to just appear in the flesh so that we could physically see him- it would have a dramatic affect on our free will. He is not going to do that. He wants us to make choices of our own accord. Yes, yes- I know that God did appear in the flesh already when Jesus came to earth. That is true. But that was a different time. At that point, cameras, photographs, the news, and the ability to disseminate information quickly did not exist. We live in a brave new world. There may have been physical objects evidencing the fact that Jesus was alive- but even if we did indeed have access to that physical evidence, it would not prove that he was the son of God, and people would still continue to doubt. There are some who believe that Jesus was a real person, but they do not believe that he was divine.

Proof of God will always remain elusive in this life. I am not making excuses. I am telling you the truth.

Even if we did have access to evidence that God does exist, there is no amount of evidence in the world that can prove anything. It can only heavily suggest.

And finally- I think it is critical to note this. Believing in God is not a matter of the intellect. It is a matter of the heart. It is a matter of emotion. There are times in life when we should allow our intelligence and logic to reign. Then there are times when we should listen to our hearts. We cannot go through life entirely relying upon our emotions and our feelings. Neither can we go through life just using our intellect, but never calling upon our feelings.

God is a matter of the heart. Believing in God is also a matter of the heart. You may choose as you so desire. I choose to believe. And it’s not because I am afraid of not believing. It’s not because I am some naive pollyanna, oblivious to the reality that besets me on all sides. I choose to believe in God because I believe that the evidence suggests that he is real. There is evidence- but proof will remain obscure.

We are given many chances in life to accept God into our hearts. Unfortunately, there does come a time when it’s too late. After Jesus comes to rapture his people or after you pass away from this world, it’s too late to change your mind. The choice has to be made in the present. And I understand, intellectually, why it is so very difficult for some people to believe. We are thinking beings. If things do not make sense to us logically, we sometimes refuse to believe them. But not everything in the world is logical.

Comments? Criticisms?
Hannah and Veritas-

Excellent answers so far. Thank you! Good job.

My issue- why would God make logical beings that want proof and logic, and then expect them to believe in him/her/them without proof?

Its great that you have explanations as to why this god character of yours doesn’t show up to his party, but the fact is there is no reason to believe in things that don’t have verifiable evidence.

Your beliefs are entirely based on one book, written thousands of years ago. This book, like many other books, has elements of fantasy and storytelling, but you assume it to be true. Everything that you have stated comes down to whether or not this book is true. It has stories of talking snakes, living in whale’s mouths, sitting in lions dens unharmed, fiery chariots from the sky, parting a sea, pillars of fire, talking bushes, people coming back from the dead and flying into the sky, super human strength, etc.
I’m going to use my better judgment to make the distinction between fantasy and reality and this book definitely falls on the side of fantasy.

And believing something based purely on emotional reasons is what lead many cults to mass injustices, it is imperitive we use our own reason to figure out and sort what people tell us and judge for ourself its validity. Just believing something because it makes you feel good, doesn’t make it true

Because some Christians claim that God objectively exists, which would bring him under the jurisdiction of science. Rightly categorizing God as subjective is not only more consistent with what Christians (even Fundamentalists) say about God when pressed on the lack of evidence, it relieves the obligation to have evidence in the first place.
